生産国：中国
聖観音菩薩(観自在菩薩）如来の大悲の徳をつかさどり、阿弥陀如来の修行期の姿として諸法を観察し、抜苦与楽を自由自在に有すがゆえに観自在と名づく。また、即時に音声を観じて、みな解脱を得させるため観世音と名づく。すなわち如来大悲の徳を代表する本尊として、徳無量なるが故に無量寿仏と名づく。この菩薩は大悲救世を本誓とするが故に、六観音（千手・十一面・如意輪・准胝・馬頭）、三十三観音（法華経普門品に説く）とともに信仰崇拝せられる。あるいは勢至菩薩とともに阿弥陀如来の脇侍となる。観音聖所として中国浙江省舟山列島普済寺が有名。
