太平洋戦争末期の1944年、戸越保育所の主任保母・板倉楓は、園児たちを空襲から守るため、東京から遠く離れた疎開先を模索していた。最初は子どもを手放すことに反発していた親たちも、日々激しくなる戦火に、せめて子どもだけでも生き延びて欲しいという一心で保母たちに我が子を託す。ところが、ようやく見つかった埼玉の受け入れ先は、雨戸もないボロボロの荒れ寺だった。幼い子どもたちとの生活は問題が山積み。それでも保母たちは、懸命に子どもたちと向き合い、みっちゃん先生はオルガンを奏で、みんなを勇気づけていた。戦争が終わり家族で過ごせる日を夢見て…。そんな願いをよそに1945年3月10日、米軍の爆撃機が東京を襲来。やがて、疎開先にも徐々に戦争の影が迫っていた―。
