ある晩、人形作りのゼペットは木の操り人形を作りました。名前はピノキオ。/「この子が本物の子供ならいいのに」。そんな彼の願いが星に届いて、妖精ブルー・フェアリーは人形に命を授け、善悪の区別を教えるためにコオロギのジミニー・クリケットにピノキオの良心役を命じました。翌朝、ピノキオはゼペットに見送られて学校へ。ところが“生きた操り人形”に目をつけた悪者のオネスト・ジョンとキデオンからだまされ、彼は芝居小屋へ売り飛ばされてしまいます。親方のストロンボリに閉じ込められ、初めて“恐怖”と“後悔”を知るピノキオ。そこへ再び妖精が現れます。後ろめたさに思わず「学校へ行く途中に怪物に出会った」と嘘をつくと、たちまちピノキオの鼻が伸び始めました。「もう嘘はつきません」。そう誓って家に帰ろうとしたピノキオでしたが、またもオネスト・ジョンたちにだまされて、今度は悪いことは何でもやり放題の“遊園地の島”プレジャー・アイランドに誘われます。ところがそこは、怠け者の悪い子をロバにしてしまうおそろしい場所でした。「助けて！」と叫びながらロバになっていく子供たち。ピノキオにもロバの耳が生えてきますが、駆けつけたジミニーと一緒に危機一髪で逃げることができました。ようやく帰ったものの、家はからっぽ。ゼペットはピノキオを捜しに行って、クジラのモンストロに飲み込まれてしまったのです。「お父さんを助けるぞ！」初めて自分の意思で海に飛び込んだピノキオはクジラのおなかの中でゼペットとめでたく再会。しかし嵐の海をゼペットを助けて必死に泳いだ末にとうとう力尽きてしまいます。その時再び妖精の魔法が…。ピノキオは再び命を与えられたのです。今度は勇気ある正直な本物の男の子として。
