ＤＶＤリリースされ大好評を博した1999年のアムステルダム音楽劇場における『指環』から６年を経た2005年、
パワーアップして上演されたヘンヒェン指揮する『指環』から。
この上演では歌手に、有名どころがけっこう参加しており、また、ＤＶＤと違ってオケがすべてオランダ・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団となっているため、キーになるオーケストラ・サウンドが統一されているのもポイントです。
なお、このアルバムはハイブリッドSACD仕様となっており、CDのステレオ音声、SACDのステレオ音声＆マルチチャンネル音声という3つの音声が収録されています（通常のCDプレーヤーでの再生も可能です）。
直接音の切れ味、楽器の音の細密な描写を味わうのであれば２チャンネル・ステレオが、ホールに響く全体の雰囲気を味わうにはマルチチャンネルが適しているとよくいわれますが、それらを聴き較べて楽しむのもSACDならではの楽しみと言えるでしょう。
