■宮島しゃもじの歴史
いまから約200年前、宮島の光明院（こうみょういん）に誓真（せいしん）という僧がいました。
光明院は室町時代に創建された浄土宗のお寺です。
古来より神聖な地と崇められてきた宮島には、主たる産業が存在しませんでした。
そこで誓真は「宮島になにか産業を」と考えていたら、夢に弁財天が現れました。
誓真は弁財天の持っている「琵琶（びわ）」が目に留まります。
そして琵琶に似た「しゃもじ」を神木で作ってみることに。
その後、誓真は島民へ宮島参拝のお土産にしようと提案し、制作方法を教えました。
宮島のしゃもじは、神木から作られていることから、使えば「幸運・好運に恵まれる」と名声が広がっていきます。
宮島のしゃもじが有名になっていくにつれて、しゃもじの生産も本格化していき、宮島の一大産業へと発展していきました。
戦時中には、しゃもじが「飯を取る」ことから「敵を召し取る」と言われ、縁起物としての人気が高まったそうです。
