1974年2月11日、米ヴァージニア州生まれのシンガー・ソングライター。95年にアルバム『ブラウン・シュガー』でデビュー。ハモンドオルガンを駆使した70年代感覚のR＆Bで一躍脚光を浴び、“ニュー・クラシック・ソウル”の代表として注目される。全米初登場1位を獲得した2000年の2ndアルバム『VOODOO』ではさらに深みを増し、高度にサウンドが複雑化。最盛期のプリンスと比較され、現代R＆Bの最高峰に立つ実力者として確固たる地位を築く。その後、長期にわたり作品発表がなかったが、2014年に約14年ぶりのアルバム『ブラック・メサイア』が発表され、大きな話題を呼ぶ。2015年夏にサマーソニック＆単独公演で来日。アメリカのソウル・シンガー、ディアンジェロによる95年発表のデビュー・アルバム。ソウルとヒップホップの感性を見事に融合させ、ニュークラシック・ソウル／ネオ・ソウルというムーヴメントを作り出した作品だ。
