のんびり、おっとりのカバくんがいろんな仕事に挑戦する。「ぼく、消防士になれるやろか。」でも「なれへんかったわ。」「船乗りはどうやろか。」と意気込んでも「どうもこうもあらへん。」「ピアニストになるちからはー ありすぎやったな。」
他にも、パイロットにバレリーナにカウボーイ、サーカスのつなわたりに、飛び込みの選手、果ては宇宙飛行士にまで挑戦するも、あえなく失敗。エアブラシを巧みに使ったカバくんのイラストはユーモアにみちて、重量級のカバくんをとても愛らしいものにみせている。また、邦訳の関西弁がなんとも味わい深く、この世界観を盛り上げる。
「どないしたら ええのんやろ。」と途方にくれたカバくんは、ここらでちょっと一休み。
そんなカバくんの、あくせくしないで、ゆっくり自分をみつめようよというメッセージは、子どもだけでなく大人の心をも癒してくれるはず。「ま、ぼちぼちいこかーということや。」（小山由絵）

言葉遊びやユーモアをこよなく愛する児童書作家・イラストレーター。絵本作品に、『わゴムはどのくらいのびるかしら？』『しりたがりやのふくろうぼうや』などがある。
ロバート・グロスマン
1940年ニューヨーク生まれ。エール大学美術科卒業。
雑誌『ニューヨーカー』の時事漫画の編集を経て、イラストレーターとなる。『タイム』『ニューズウィーク』『ニューヨークタイムズ』など、さまざまな新聞・雑誌で活躍。
