南北戦争のしこりが未だ強く残る南部を舞台にした、名優ロジャース主演、フォード演出の3部作の一本。のどかな雰囲気の中に笑いとサスペンスとハートウォーミングがちりばめられた叙情性たっぷりの味わい深いヒューマンドラマ。1890年代。ケンタッキー。人情家の判事ウィリアム・プリーストは検察官で次の判事選挙に立候補する気のメイデュー元上院議員 とはよく衝突するが、名裁判官として人気があった。判事の甥ジェロームが弁護士の資格を取って戻ってきた。彼は判事の隣に住む孤児のエリー・メイと恋仲だが、彼の母は私生児の彼女を疎んでいた。ある日、エリー・メイが町の床屋を通ったとき、二人の男が彼女を私生児だと侮辱した。その場に居合わせた判事が怒るよりも早く、鍛冶屋の助手ボブ・ギリスが男を殴り倒した。この一件を根に持った男は町の酒場で三人がかりでギリスを襲い、ギリスは思わずナイフで身を護り、傷害で逮捕されるのだが・・・。不当な奴隷虐待を背景に、硬骨漢、老判事プリーストはさまざまな干渉にもめげず、再選を賭けて新興の実力者と闘う。この作品をよっぽど気に入っていたのか、フォードは後に「太陽は光り輝く」として自身でリメイクをしているが、そちらも傑作だ。
