ゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団のコンサートマスターだったカール・ズスケ[1934- ]が、ベルリン国立歌劇場管弦楽団の第1コンサートマスター時代の1965年に結成したのが、この“ズスケ四重奏団”。のちにベルリン弦楽四重奏団と名を変えるこのカルテットの全盛期はやはりズスケ四重奏団の時代でしょう。
ドレスデン、ルカ教会の空間に響き渡るその質実で独得の美感を湛えた魅力的なサウンドと、作品の造型をきっちりと描き出す堅牢な構築性は、独墺系作品の演奏に最適なバランスの良さを持ったものといえ、何度聴いても飽きのこない音楽づくりがいまだにファンが多いことを納得させてくれます。（ＨＭＶ）
