本書は,数学の基礎理論である線形代数を解説したテキストである.線形代数学の標準的なコースを行列の定義から始めて,最近では省略されることの多い,正規行列の対角化・2次曲面の分類・ジョルダン標準形まで扱った.さらに,高校の内容とうまくつなげられるように,近年高校教科書から削減された内容を補った.
証明は抽象的なものは避け,行列の計算をやりながらできる方法を採用した.逆行列などの新しい概念が出てきたら,それを記号のまま後まで持ち越すことは避け,定義の直後に例や計算法および問題を配置した.また,1次独立の概念などの天下り的な定義は避け,そのような概念が必要となる理由が分かるように配慮した.ベクトル空間については,抽象的ベクトル空間には触れず,数ベクトル空間のみ扱った.連立方程式の解法はやや後回しになるが,掃き出し法で逆行列を計算する項を設け,線形代数学を理解する上で欠かせない基本変形について,最初から訓練できるように工夫した.加えて,理解を深められるように,数多くの練習問題を用意した.
