1960年代から1980年代初めにかけ美男の代名詞的存在だった。
『禁じられた遊び』の名匠ルネ・クレマンがパトリシア・ハイスミスの小説を映画化。当時無名ながら主役に抜擢されたアラン・ドロンが、美貌の裏に陰を秘めた貧乏青年を熱演。
この1作で一気にスターダムを駆け上がった。
2017年5月9日、今後出演する1本ずつの映画と舞台を最後に、引退するとの意向を示した。
