【「ロミオとジュリエット」誕生の陰に若きシェイクスピアの恋があった・・・・。】1593年、ロンドン。テムズ川をはさんで、カーテン座とローズ座という二つの芝居小屋があった。芝居好きのエリザベス女王(ジュディ・デンチ)のために演目を競い合い、ローズ座ではシェイクスピア(ジョセフ・ファインズ)が新作コメディ“ロミオと海賊の娘エセル”を執筆していた。なかなか筆が進まないシェイクスピアだったが、カーテン座で豪族令嬢ヴァイオラ(グウィネス・パルトロウ)と出逢い、一目で恋に落ちる。その一方、オーディションでトマス・ケントと名乗る俳優を見出したシェイクスピアは、人が変わったように台本を仕上げていくが・・・。1998年度アカデミー賞13部門にノミネートされ、作品賞、主演女優賞(グウィネス・パルトロウ)、ほか主要7部門を受賞。全世界でも60を超える賞にノミネートされたラブ・ロマンスの傑作。
