最近はステンレス製のフラスコ（スキットル）が巾をきかせていますが、スキットルボトルの伝統素材といえば「ピューター製」です。ピューターは錫（スズ）を主な成分とする合金で、融点が低く加工しやすいという特徴を持ちます。
また錫は、不純物を吸収する性質があり、液体を浄化するといわれ、皿や酒器、花瓶などに 古来より、最高の材質として用いられてきました。
かつてイギリスには世界最大の錫鉱山があり、14世紀にはロンドンが世界最大のピューター製品生産地であったことから、狩猟時の携帯酒器たるスキットルボトルの多くが、ピューター製であったことは当然といえるでしょう。
酸、アルカリに強く、その粒子の中に不純物を吸着する作用がある為、ウイスキーなどが本来持っていたうまみを最大限に引き出してくれます。
また他の金属のように錆びたりすることなく、美しさも永く保てます。
