第二次世界大戦下のフィンランド・ヘルシンキ。激しい戦火の中、画家トーベ・ヤンソンは自分を慰めるように、不思議な「ムーミントロール」の物語を描き始める。/やがて戦争が終わると、彼女は爆撃でほとんど廃墟と化したアトリエを借り、本業である絵画制作に打ち込んでいくのだが、著名な彫刻家でもある厳格な父との軋轢、保守的な美術界との葛藤の中で満たされない日々を送っていた。それでも、若き芸術家たちとの目まぐるしいパーティーや恋愛、様々な経験を経て、自由を渇望するトーベの強い思いはムーミンの物語とともに大きく膨らんでゆく。/そんな中、彼女は舞台演出家のヴィヴィカ・バンドラーと出会い激しい恋に落ちる。それはムーミンの物語、そしてトーベ自身の運命の歯車が大きく動き始めた瞬間だった。
