独立記念日の前夜。ワシントンDCのFBI本部に設置されたサイバー犯罪部に異変が起こった。交通、通信、原子力、水道などのあらゆる全米のインフラを監視するシステムに何者かがハッキングを仕掛けてきたのだ。そのころ、ニューヨーク市警総合テロ対策班のジョン・マクレーン警部補は、しばらく連絡を取っていない別れた妻との娘ルーシーに会うために、管轄外であるニュージャージー州の大学に立ち寄っていた。その時、FBIから、ニュージャージー州内に住むマットというハッカーの身柄を確保し、FBI本部に連れて行けという無線連絡が入る。これが不運の始まりだった――。
