札幌駅北口で1996ー2014に営業した<蠍座>は北海道最後の名画座。その番組表(蠍座通信)には館主田中次郎の書く辛口コラムと本音の作品解説が毎月掲載され、人気を博した。本書はふつうの映画館であれば時期がくれば捨てられる運命にあるその番組表(チラシ)を、すべてそのままの形で18年6カ月分(222号)をまとめ、その間に上映された1550作品の索引と館主の書き下ろしエッセイを加えたものである。映画史・社会史・文化史にとっての貴重な第一級の資料である。
