・愛知県犬山市、対馬列島、岐阜と長野の県境などに自生するモクセイ科の落葉広葉樹。絶滅が危惧されるほど天然の個体数は少ないが、公園、庭園、植物園などには多数植栽されている。・日本以外では朝鮮半島や台湾にも分布が見られ、当地では「亭子（日本でいう東屋）」に添える「亭子木」として使われる。
・ナンジャモンジャと呼ばれる木の代表種であるが、ナンジャモンジャとは、名前が分からない大木全般の総称であり、特定の樹種を示すものではない。有名なナンジャモンジャとしてのヒトツバタゴには明治神宮外苑のものがあり、樹齢百数十年とされた初代は大正時代に天然記念物の指定を受けた（現在では平成２６年に植えられた三代目が後を継いでいる。）
