岫巖は、玉石の中国最大の産地で埋蔵量も豊富であり「玉都」と呼ばれ、産出する玉石は「岫玉」と呼ばれる。
河北省の満城漢墓から出土した2000年前の中山靖王劉勝夫妻の「金縷玉衣」等は、岫玉で製作されたものと鑑定されています。
岫岩玉は、中国の「玉の里」遼寧省鞍山産の玉で、中国で約２万年前から発掘されていたと言われる歴史のある石で、中国の「五大玉」の一つとされています。
翡翠に似ていますが、岫岩玉は軟玉と呼ばれています！硬玉と違い彫刻等が中国で盛んにされています。
