1928年、東京に生まれる。東京大学仏文科卒。マルキ・ド・サドをはじめ数多くのフランス文学を翻訳・紹介。その他中世の悪魔学(デモノロジー)、美術評論、文芸評論、独自の幻想小説など幅広いジャンルで活躍。『唐草物語』で泉鏡花賞、『高丘親王航海記』で読売文学賞を受賞。87年に死去
