－同コンビが1990～96年で完成させた ヴォーン・ウィリアムズ 交響曲全曲録音 (9曲) (+管弦楽曲数曲) からの1枚。
－[1]は1944～47年作曲。第二次大戦を反映しているかのように激しさや不穏さ、不気味さ、皮肉な気分が全曲に漂います。特に激しい第1楽章冒頭は、1940～41年にかけておこなわれたナチス・ドイツによるロンドン大空襲 (“ブリッツ” と呼ばれる) を思い起こさずにはいられません。その後 現れる皮肉的な軽さも印象的です。終楽章は終始 静か。とはいえ平和が訪れたという明るさや慰めを感じるものではなく、あくまで不気味な雰囲気です。しかしその後 2つの美しい名曲が置かれているのがいい。A. デイヴィスも緻密、繊細に音を扱いながら、情感的でエモーショナル。素晴らしい演奏です。－ブックレット内には録音時のものと思しき、Vウィリアムズ未亡人、デイヴィス、リトルのスリーショット掲載。
