政治犯や窃盗犯、情緒不安定の暴れ者、重婚者、義理の妹をレイプした少年など、クセのある受刑者で構成された第27機甲部隊、通称囚人部隊第2小隊に東部戦線への転属が言い渡された。最前線に着いた一行は、ソ連との戦車戦で成果を上げるが、その型破りな行動からワイズハーゲン大佐(D・キャラダイン)に目を付けられることになる。ある日彼らは大佐から、後方への転属と長期休暇を条件に、ソ連領に潜入して補給列車を爆破するよう命じられた。囚人部隊は幾多の危機を乗り越えて何とか作戦を成功させるが、大佐と将軍(O・リード)は彼らを、2週間の休養を与えた後に再び最前線へ送ろうとする…。監督はアクションとサスペンスを併せ持った娯楽作を得意とするゴードン・ヘスラー。戦場シーンはもちろん、食堂での乱闘や娼館での大暴れといった豪快な見せ場の合間に、ソ連兵に化けた囚人部隊とソ連兵とのやりとりなど、スリリングなシーンをちりばめ要所を締める。戦車の登場場面が多いのも魅力のひとつで、囚人部隊がソ連軍と戦車戦を繰り広げる前半の山場は、両軍戦車入り乱れての接近戦や戦車内の描写、また破壊された戦車から兵士が脱出するくだりなど見どころタップリ。撮影にはSU100、T34/85、T55などのソ連製戦車が動員され、ミリタリー・ファンも納得の名シーンに仕上がっている。
