1943年の夏。戦時下のイタリアは混乱期にあったが、ファシストの高官を父に持つカルロ（ジャン＝ルイ・トランティニヤン）は戦火を避け、高級避暑地であるリッチョーネにやってきた。祖国の苦戦をよそに、ここで青春を享楽している上流階級の若者の仲間に加わったカルロは、ロッサーナ（ジャクリーヌ・ササール）という娘と親しくなる。
ある日、突然ドイツ軍の戦闘機が現れ、低空飛行で威嚇され、避暑地は大混乱に陥った。カルロはその時泣きじゃくる一人の幼い少女を助ける。そして、その母親で未亡人のロベルタ（エレオノラ・ロッシ＝ドラゴ）と出会う。二人は急速に惹かれ合い、ある夜口づけを交わすが、それを見てしまったロッサーナは泣いて走り去る。二人はやがて深く愛し合い、はじめて愛の歓びと幸せに酔った。しかし、戦局は転換期を迎え、ムッソリーニが失脚し、パドリオ政権が樹立、カルロたちブルジョアの身の安全も怪しくなってきた。そしてカルロとロベルタは重大な決意をする。
「鞄を持った女」（61）「家族日誌」（62）など、多くの人間ドラマの名作を世に放った名匠ヴァレリオ・ズッリーニ監督が描く、戦時下の禁じられた恋の物語。エレオノラ・ロッシ＝ドラゴは大人の女の官能を完璧に演じ、本作でスターダムにのし上がった。
